Couple evicts low-rent tenants to make way for mansion
The "hipster landlords" of an eight-unit residential building at 533 Bergen Street in Prospect Heights plan to remodel it as a 20-room private residence and have forced out four rent-stabilized tenants under a law that allows property owners to evict rent-stabilized tenants if the owners plan to move in. Three tenants paying higher rent remain in the building, but the landlords have begun eviction proceedings against the one remaining long-time rent-stabilized tenant, who pays $402 a month. Her apartment, where she lives with her son and nieces, is slated to become a storage room for bicycles and strollers, and a playroom for the landlords' children.

Suarez is getting terrible legal advice. The grandstanding of the free "legal clinic" is going to bankrupt the tenant when he loses. Like it or not, the law is the law and if the owners want to move in, they can.

#1, if you owned a building that cost you a nice chunk of change to maintain and pay taxes on every year, and you had a tenant paying 400 dollars a month that wouldn't even cover your expenses for that part of the property, what would you do? I am sure you'd love to join them in hell, but you can't. So keep your envy to yourself. Cheers...

Thats the law and it is legal. Dont cry since it didnt work in their favor. How about all the others that pay below market rents? These tenants force the market rate units HIGHER since there is less supply of them. How about the Professional tenants that just refuse to pay rent and welcome landlords taking them to court for nonpayment.

people who cannot afford market rents like every other city in the world will move to areas that they can afford. this is excellent news for owners who want to live closer to their high paying jobs and can afford mortgage on these expensive buildings. i think it is the best thing in the world to let the market prevail. if you are on a fixed income MOVE; if you cannot afford the rent move to an area where you can and free up apartments for those who can afford it. every other major city in the world lets the market prevail and allows the market to price rents and values.
