City audit finds that UN owes $6M in back rent

City Comptroller William Thompson, Jr. announced today that an audit revealed that the United Nations Development Corp. failed to pay the city more than $12 million in rent. The audit found that between January 2005 and December 2006, the UNDC retained an annual surplus of $12 million, which should have been paid to the city. Thompson said the UNDC has already paid the city's Economic Development Corporation $6 million, but is refusing to pay the rest. "In this tight fiscal environment we cannot afford to let any revenue slip through our fingers," Thompson said in a statement that the EDC "should take every action to ensure that UNDC pays its balance in full." The back rent is connected to a suspended project to develop additional United Nation office space at Robert Moses State Park. TRD
